Tom Everill retired in 2016 as President and CEO of Northwest Center and is working on a book about the inner journey of emergent leadership. For 27 years Tom trudged through a succession of corporate finance positions in the global logistics industry. But it was at Northwest Center where Tom’s passion for social justice intersected with his experience as a business executive.
A $50 million diversified social enterprise conglomerate, Northwest Center’s sole purpose is to promote full inclusion of people with developmental conditions such as autism, Down syndrome, and cerebral palsy into mainstream society. It applies lean manufacturing processes to harness the unique skills of people who experience the world differently to create extraordinary value for demanding brands such as Boeing, Starbucks, Comcast, and Amazon. And it reinvests 100% of its profits in early intervention therapy and inclusive early learning programs for children with  developmental disabilities.
Having experienced the power of business to produce social justice at scale, Tom is impatient with companies whose primary intention is profit and shareholder value with discretionary bits of “corporate social responsibility” around the edges. He knows we can do better; he has seen it work.
Tom is also an experienced practitioner of emergent leadership, having nurtured the transformation of Northwest Center from a company burdened with staggering operating losses, mounting debt, and moral drift into a flourishing thought leader with a highly collaborative culture, businesses that are both both profitable and inclusive, and a strong balance sheet. On the strength of this turnaround, Tom was introduced to the 2015 International Dialogic Organization Development Conference in Vancouver BC as the “poster child” of emergent leadership.
